If you have been in the market for a bathroom scale lately you surely realize that these scales are not like the old bulky and inaccurate analog scales your parents may have kept under the sink in their bathroom. Today’s scales are gorgeous, extremely accurate and offer a host of outstanding features driven by computer technology that we could only dream of only a decade ago.
But all of the features can be confusing if you are not sure what they do. And the more features you add to your bathroom scale the more expensive it will be so it is important to understand what the features do to decide whether or not you will be spending that kind of money.
Here is a description of the common features you will find on today’s upscale digital bathroom scales:
Weight
Of course no bathroom scale would be a scale without measuring your weight. For the most part all digital scales will be more accurate than an analog scale so no matter which one you pick you should be OK as long as you don’t go with an off-brand model. The other thing you need to know about this feature is that some scales are not rated for certain weights – most are rated for a maximum of 300-320 pounds. So if you are heavier than that be sure to look for a scale that is rated for a higher weight.
Body fat
Many of today’s higher end scales offer more features than just weight. Probably the second most popular feature is a measurement of body fat %. This feature is great because when you say you want to lose weight what you really mean is that you want to lose fat. If your weight loss program includes a weight lifting program you may not see much movement on the weight portion of your scale when though you are getting healthier. That is where body fat % comes in to play. It measures the % of your body that is fat. As long as that number is going down, even if your weight is staying the same, you are are getting healthier.
Body water
A significant fraction of the human body is water. Lean muscle tissue contains about 75% water. Blood contains 95% water, body fat contains 14% water and bone has 22% water. The human body is about 60% water in adult males and 55% in adult females. Many people believe in monitoring body water % as another measurement of their health and there are scales today that offer this feature to them. For your average user this feature is probably not needed but if you are serious about your body measurements this is a great one to add.
Body Mass Index
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a measure of body fat based on height and weight that applies to both adult men and women. Because it depends on height as one of the measurements for calculation there are scales that allow you to enter your height into the scale’s memory so that it can tell you what your BMI is. BMI is something that your doctor will use to describe a range of health to you such as whether you are obese or morbidly obese. Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater.
